Websites have long been essential for businesses to build their brands and sell their products. It is one of the items at the top of a startup’s to-do list. It’s almost like your business does not exist until it is online. Building a website is not the simplest undertaking, it involves many components that merge to create a masterpiece or a mess. While there are many platforms and builders available so that you can design your website yourself, if you struggle with any of the creative elements a website requires, you will need experts in your corner. Before you present your website to the world there are a few steps you need to follow first.

Consider who will be surfing your website

Have you really nailed down your target audience? One of the first steps in starting a new business is finding out whether there is a demand for the product or service you want to sell. You can’t have a product without knowing who your market is. You need to understand who will be visiting your site. Be sure to take that into consideration when you start creating content. Your content should be appealing to your future customers and one way to ensure that is by creating a buyer persona. Establishing who your ideal customer is and what qualities and characteristics they possess will help you develop compelling content that converts into sales.

Know what your competitors are doing

Studying what your competitors are doing is essential for following trends and seeing what kind of business decisions they are making. Researching your competitors will help you make smarter business and marketing decisions. Monitoring your competitors can help you decide which keywords you should be using for your SEO strategy, what the best pricing models are for your products, and how you can improve your own marketing abilities.

Map out the buying journey

Consider the consumer journey from research to purchase. It is a lot more complicated than you would expect until you sit down to define each stage. What will your potential customer see when they Google a service or product that your business provides? Will your website be ranked at the top or lost on page two? Let’s imagine that you are ranking highly, and they decide to click on your link. Have you created a pleasurable user experience? Is the content sincere and professional? Is the navigation between tabs easy and intuitive? It is absolutely essential that you map out this whole process.

Include testimonials

Testimonials serve an important purpose on your website. Having testimonials is one of the factors customers consider before clicking on the checkout cart or moving to the next stage in the consumer buying process. Make a habit of asking your customers to give you a testimonial every time they have had a good experience. Testimonials are pure psychology; customers often seek the advice of the people that they trust, like family members or friends, so having a couple on your website will mimic that scenario.

Spelling and grammar

Nothing can destroy a website more than spelling errors and bad grammar. In the past, you may have relied on your middle school education but now there are many free grammar checking platforms out there so there is no excuse for a badly written copy. You can only have one opportunity to make a first impression; don’t allow a poor copy to sabotage the hard work and effort you have put into your digital marketing.

Call to action

You can have the most beautifully designed website and captivating copy, but without a clear call to action, your customers won’t know where to go. Make sure it is easy for anyone viewing your website to take the next step towards making a purchase. Include phrases such as “Subscribe Now” or “Add to Cart”, to lead the customer in the right direction.

Keep your content relevant

Designing a website is definitely not a once-off project. While the framework may remain the same your content shouldn’t. Google’s algorithms change all the time which is why you need to refresh your content continuously and optimize your site regularly. That is of course not the only reason to keep your site up to date, your customers will appreciate current content too.

Follow these steps and you will be well on your way to creating an amazing user experience. Need more help? We would love to talk to you so get in touch!
