The rise of Instagram Reels

By now you should be familiar with TikTok, and if you aren’t we strongly encourage you to do a quick Google search (it’s an amazing platform!) TikTok originally started as an insanely addictive social app but it has since become a massive opportunity for businesses to market their products. The rise in the popularity of TikTok for marketing has forced other platforms to add features and improve their product offerings. One platform that is leading this trend is Instagram. They have created a feature called Instagram Reels and it is going to be a huge hit amongst Instagram users! We decided to take a closer look at how it works and what it can do for your business.

What are Instagram Reels?

Instagram Reels enable users to create and post 15-second multi-clip videos to music or other types of audio, in a fun and fresh way. You can also add special effects, stickers, and text. Reels are posted to your feed with the Explore page being the place you want them to show up. Feature Reels and Top Reels are selected by the Instagram algorithm. Entertaining and unique videos have a higher likelihood of appearing at the top of the rankings. Who you already follow, what content you interact with, and where you’re located also plays a big role in where your content ranks, and what content is delivered to you. It first launched in Brazil in late 2019 but I rapidly expanding globally. 

How will Instagram Reels affect social media for businesses?

The answer really depends on your target audience. Do you have a younger audience? Do they prefer short-form content to long-form content? Reels are meeting the need for high-quality content that’s still informal but has a longer shelf life than the 24 hours Instagram Stories allows. Instagram Reels will give businesses the ability to extend their network beyond their immediate audience and connect with a different type of user. We increasingly have busier lives and shorter attention spans, so Instagram Reels fits perfectly into the instant gratification model. Instagram Reels is a fantastic way to experiment with the kind of content you create. 


Here are a few ways your business can use Instagram Reels for marketing.

  • Educational content for example; recipes, makeup tutorials, or fitness tips will help you widen your audience. Sharing with your followers increases engagement, and inspires user-generated content.

  • Reels make it possible for you to get in front of users who may not normally follow your content, because it is located on the Explore page.

  • Give your business a human persona by sharing behind the scenes content. It builds credibility and gains trust.

What is the difference between Instagram Reels and Stories?

First and foremost Instagram Reels has more video editing tools and effects than Instagram Stories. Creating transitions for multiple clips is another advantage Reels has over Stories. Secondly, you cannot use photos in Reels, unlike Stories. Last but not least, only your followers can see your Stories, whereas Reels are added to the Explore page where they are freely available to everyone on Instagram.

Audio – You can get music from the Instagram music library, but you can also just create a Reel with live audio.

AR effects – There are a number of effects you can choose from in the Instagram effect gallery.

Timer and countdown – As with photography, you can use a timer and countdown to record your clip. 

Align – Line up the objects from your previous clips before recording another one, your transitions will be smoother.

Speed – Speed up or slow down parts of your audio or video.

How do you use Instagram Reels?


  1. Tap Reels at the bottom of your Instagram camera. You will see a number of tools you can use to design your Reel, like music and others.

  2. Record your first clip by holding the capture button and end the clip when you are happy with your work.

  3. Once you hit the share button you can change the cover image, add captions and hashtags.

  4. Once you have shared your Reel you can find it in the Reels tab on your profile.


We are still in the early days of Instagram Reels; it will be interesting to see how it evolves and whether it will replace Instagram Stories.
